Rocky's brother knows the ropes: Burt Young Tries Boxing in Real Life as Co-Manager of a Challenger The actor pointed out a line right up and left of his jaw. I have a scar here, he said, from Springfield, Mass. And see these teeth? "Burt Young did not discover boxing in the movies, although, to millions, that is the obvious association. It was Young, in Paulie's role, who introduced Rocky Balboa to the meat locker where he hit a few sides of meat before his heavyweight fight against Apollo Creed. Balboa, by the way, is still fighting. Next month, Sylvester Stallone will begin production of "Rocky IV" and Young, as his brother-in-law, will be next to him. But before that bigger show than life, Young will have a real drama when David Sears tries to take away Michael Spinks' light crown on February 23 in Atlantic City. Young is one of the three co-directors of Sears. This boy, he said on Tuesday with genuine pride, beat me years ago. And man is not reluctant to recognize that he could take care of himself. On his own, Young won 32 out of 34 fights in the Marine Corps and 14 of his professional fights. "But I wasn't serious," he said, "not like a David Sears. I fought when I was unhappy at home, when I had to leave the house." He also fought, he said, when he was fat. Young would reserve a two-week fight, so in Massachusetts or White Plains, N.Y., then try to lose 30 pounds. "He was an adventurer," said his friend Vincent Savino, a dentist who persuaded Young to join him and Andy Giovingo, a bolera owner, sponsoring Sears. And a little crazy, Young said. Their training methods did not include trips to the meat locker. Young was anything but a hungry fighter. But they were strange enough to justify inclusion in the trilogy "Rocky". Now, in Sears, he has found a disciple. Before riding the camp at the Catskills with Coach Al Braverman, Young would have the challenger on the road at 4 a.m., running with a brick in each hand. Tears would also have to paint punches with bricks. That would follow by hanging a circle full of sledgehammer. And at the end of the training, he would be required to throw a tire supporting Young around a track. So, at least, Sears will be prepared to move mountains when facing the undisputed and undefeated champion. Young has also entered the ring with Sears on more than one occasion. At such times he has used a coupon jacket. It happens that Savino and Young met a heavy bag. That was 25 years ago. Savino had been an intramural boxing champion in Georgetown and decided to be back in shape after establishing his practice. "He was in the Y, hitting the bag, Savino remembered, when these two tough guys came in. One of them, Burt, was very instructive. He said, 'You are taking your hands wrong, you are doing this and that bad.' So, finally, I said, 'Do you want to box?' "Young did. The place they chose was Savino's office. We used to push the furniture back, the actor said, smiling. Well, the dentist said, it was a big waiting room. We cover every Wednesday and Sunday. In fact, I used to box his brother, Bobby, in my waiting room while I was running my practice. I don't know how many clients I lost for that. "Savino also accompanied Young to Lost Battalion Hall, where the Parks Department executed a boxing program. Savino met Johnny Sears, a boxer. Later, the amateur career of Johnny's younger brother, David, who won the title of Golden Gloves of 178 pounds in 1981, followed with interest. Meanwhile, of course, Young had gone from wrestler to successful actor. It's not that he would have been willing to box for a living. His biggest payday, he remembered, was $400. He was in every business in the world," Young said, "he didn't have an inventory. Anything that required sweat and a lot of bravado. I didn't start acting until I was 28. What happened is that I was chasing a girl and wanted to study with Lee Strasberg. I thought he (Strasberg) was a girl. Anyway, I met him and he said, "You're too tense. You've got a lot of tension over you. I feel like you're an emotional library. "Young landed his first role, as a monsignor, in a game off the road. He had appeared, by his own estimation, in 16 films before Paulie's share was delivered, so he won an Oscar nomination as Best Support Actor. That performance was nothing, he said, compared to his travels to the ring as an average weight. Going to Massachusetts without a coach or manager was something," he said. "The guy in the other corner would always look twice as big. Walking those steps was like going to the electric chair. You had to start finding buttons on yourself to press so that you look better walking through those steps." The man has come to admire every fighter who walks through those steps. Heroic people called them. And he thought of Clarence Osby's first blow two years ago. He made a round in Chicago that went from 3 to 1 on Shakespeare for drama, Young said. "There was no writer, no director. But there was a life force right there. "Young, 44, has been in contact with that force occasionally offering as targets for Sears. Savino, 50, has not been transferred to that end. But the dentist has run in 17 marathons and continues to box with friends. The other night, he reported, was arrested in three rounds by a firefighter at a private gym under a restaurant. This is how it goes in boxing, for all but a few precious. In Sears, they think, they have someone special. "I look at him," Young said, "when I box and move with him, I no longer belong to the ring with him. He has overcome us all with our dreams."
